Type 2 Diabetes disease description
In 2005, 8.6% of residents reported having diabetes in Los Angeles County1. There are two types of diabetes Type 1 and Type 2. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes do not produce insulin. People with Type 2 diabetes do not respond to insulin in a proper way. Over time diabetes can result in kidney failure, vision loss, heart disease, and limb amputation2.
While rates of diabetes in Los Angeles vary by ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and educational level, the most recent Los Angels County Health Survey indicates that Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing among all adults3.
To address this issue, the Chronic Disease Management Consortium offers community screening and education to those at risk of developing diabetes and to those who have been diagnosed with the disease.
